Money Shame: The 64% Problem

I learned at an early age that finances are finite.

When I was a little girl (probably about five), my father offered to buy me a dollhouse, and I

picked the one with electric lights. I was a bit of a tech geek then too.

"We can't afford that right now," he said.

It was about $50 (which was a lot for him because he had just started his medical practice).

I was ashamed that I had even asked. But I chose a simpler one, which still brought me many hours of creative play.

Now, as an adult, I sometimes still want the grown-ass woman equivalent of electric lights.

BUT...I've learned how to be fiscally responsible, especially after my divorce. I treat myself but still save money for the years ahead (at least 30, according to life expectancy calculations). I economize on less important things so I can indulge in the "big treats" (like travel, gifts for my own kids and grandkids.)

As important as the money management process is eliminating the ignorance and shame that sometimes surround women and money.

A whopping 64 percent of people in relationships have hidden purchases from their partners. What's especially interesting is that the percentage is actually higher for men than for women!

Many of us admit their financial management shortcomings. With life expectancy for all of us on the upswing, having enough savings to carry us through to our 80s, 90s, and 100s becomes even more critical.

Like health habits, we need good wealth habits.

It's never too early or too late to develop these habits and an in-depth understanding of how to save for the future without sacrificing the "treats" you may want today.

Let's remove the shame and sneaking...get smarter about our wallets...and ensure we are financially secure!
